Canine Vaccination Protocols

Canine Core Vaccines

Canine core vaccines are those for which diseases are widely distributed and/or have high mortality or morbidity. These vaccines are required for all canine patients of the Boston Heights Veterinary Hospital.

Canine distemper virus (CDV), canine adenovirus (CAV) and parainfluenza

Canine distemper virus
  • Highly contagious and severe in disease
  • Causes initially a pronounced upper respiratory disease followed later by neurologic disease, which may include twitches or seizures
  • May cause abortion in pregnant females
Canine Adenovirus
  • The cause of infectious hepatitis in dogs
  • Contagious respiratory disease
  • Causes cough, fever, and lethargy
Vaccine Schedule:
  • Puppies receive initial vaccine starting at 6-8 wks of age
  • Boosters are given monthly until 16 weeks of age
  • A booster is given 1 year later
  • Additional boosters are given at 2 year intervals
Canine Parvovirus (CPV)
  • Highly contagious
  • Persists for a long time in the environment
  • Infects rapidly dividing cells in the intestinal lining
  • Has a pronounced effect on the dogs intestinal lining producing severe bloody diarrhea
  • Destroys white blood cells causing the dog’s immune system to become depleted
  • Bacteria gains access to the body through the compromised intestinal lining
  • Affected dogs often die quickly from sepsis (infection of the blood)
Vaccine Schedule:
  • All puppies receive this vaccine on the same schedule as the in combination with the distemper vaccine
  • Boosters are given annually
Rabies - Required by law
  • All infections are fatal and can be transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch from an infected dog.
Vaccine Schedule:
  • Puppies are given the first vaccine after 3 months of age
  • First booster is given 1 year later
  • Additional boosters are given at 3 year intervals
Lyme Disease
  • Currently entering Ohio from Pennsylvania and West Virginia
  • Causes polyarthritis and widespread inflammation
  • Can be debilitating and potentially fatal
Vaccine Schedule:
  • Initial vaccine and then a booster in 4 weeks
  • Annual booster vaccine thereafter
